Overview

This presentation explores the adaptation of Zero-Odor, 100% Exhaust Displacement Ventilation (DV) systems for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It introduces a paradigm shift in smoke management — moving from traditional mixing ventilation to buoyancy-driven displacement strategies.

Core Concepts

System Type: 100% Once-Through, No-Recirculation system. Unlike conventional HVAC which recirculates air, this system draws 100% fresh outdoor air and exhausts all indoor air without recirculation — critical for smoke evacuation and odor control.

Core Principle: Buoyancy-driven displacement ventilation relies on thermal plumes rather than mechanical mixing. Warm, contaminated air rises naturally and is extracted at high level, while cool, fresh air is supplied at low level — creating a stratified, piston-like flow that pushes contaminants upward and out.

Fluid Dynamics: The Archimedes Number (Ar) at the diffuser face must be significantly greater than 1.0 to ensure buoyancy forces exceed inertial forces, preventing undesirable mixing of supply air with room contaminants.

Why This Matters for KSA

With extreme ambient temperatures and unique architectural typologies (large atriums, open-plan commercial spaces, high-occupancy public buildings), conventional smoke management approaches often fall short. Displacement ventilation offers:

  • Superior contaminant removal efficiency
  • Lower energy consumption (reduced fan power)
  • Improved indoor air quality
  • Better thermal comfort stratification
  • Compliance with international fire and smoke management codes
